The Players Championship 2026: Golf's Biggest Week Is Here

Okay so I'll be honest — I didn't fully appreciate The Players Championship until someone explained it to me. It's not a major. But it kind of is? The purse is $25 million, the field is stacked with the best players in the world, and the course — TPC Sawgrass — is one of the most recognizable in golf. That island green on 17 alone is worth tuning in for.

The tournament runs March 12-15 at TPC Sawgrass in Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida. Tee times start Thursday morning, so if you're planning to watch, clear your schedule.

Who Won It Last Year?

Rory McIlroy took the title in 2025, finishing at -12 (276 total). Before that, Scottie Scheffler won back-to-back in 2024 and 2022-2023. So yeah, the recent winners list reads like a who's who of the best players on tour right now.

What Makes TPC Sawgrass So Tough?

The course plays to a par 72 and the Stadium Course layout is designed to create drama. Narrow fairways, water everywhere, and that famous par-3 17th with the island green that has swallowed more golf balls than I care to think about. Even the best players in the world make double bogey there. It's genuinely one of the most nerve-wracking holes in golf to watch.

Who Should You Watch?

With a field this strong it's hard to narrow it down, but here are a few names worth keeping an eye on:

Rory McIlroy is the defending champion and always seems to show up at Sawgrass. Scottie Scheffler is the world number one and has won this thing twice already. Beyond those two, the whole top of the world rankings is in the field — that's what makes The Players so fun to follow.

Why This Tournament Matters

The Players hands out 750 FedExCup points to the winner, which is the same as a major. The winner also takes home $4.5 million. It's a Signature Event, meaning the field is limited to the top players in the world — no fillers, no easy rounds. Every pairing is competitive.

For someone like me who is still learning the Tour, this is one of the best tournaments to start with. The drama is built into the course, the names are all ones you've heard of, and that 17th hole is going to deliver at least one moment that makes you put your phone down.

Tee times are posted on the PGA Tour website. Round 1 starts Thursday, March 12.
